How to Clean a Grinder?

Cleaning a metal grinder can be a tedious task, but it's essential to maintain its performance and longevity. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you clean your metal grinder effectively:

  1. Determine the frequency of cleaning: The frequency of cleaning your grinder depends on how often and how you use it. If you use fine kief as a topping or in the bong, it's recommended to clean it at least once a week. On the other hand, if you don't grind as frequently and use chunky leaves for joints, you may only need to clean it once a month. If your grinder starts to squeal when rotated or has hard deposits of sticky plant matter, it's time to clean it.

  2. Save your kief: Before cleaning your grinder, place it in the freezer for 15 to 30 minutes. This will make the cannabis trichomes brittle and easy to peel. Once you've frozen the grinder, disassemble it and brush off any build-ups with a toothbrush or toothpick. Gather the cannabinoid-rich kief on a rolling tray so you can enjoy it later.

  3. Choose the appropriate solvent: The type of solvent you use depends on the type of grinder you have. For acrylic and plastic grinders, use warm water or a vinegar-baking soda solution. However, for metal grinders, use a solution of coarse salt and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or boiling water.

  4. Clean the grinder: Start by thoroughly washing the grinder components with hot water and dish soap and wiping them dry. This will prevent the need to refill the alcohol solution too frequently. Next, fill a zip-lock or plastic bag halfway with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, and add only the components that require cleaning (usually the grinding wheel, kief catcher, and mesh). If the components are not completely soaked, shake them every 10 minutes. Keep the grinder immersed for 20 minutes to an hour, depending on how dirty it is and how much muck has accumulated in the nooks and threads. Finally, remove any residual dirt with a nylon brush and dry each section with a paper towel.

  5. Assemble the grinder: Once you've cleaned all the components, assemble them back together and your grinder will be ready to use again.

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind when cleaning your metal grinder:

  • Avoid using abrasive cleaning products as they can damage the grinder's surface.

  • When using isopropyl alcohol, make sure to use food-grade alcohol if you plan on using the grinder for food items.

  • Always check the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning to ensure you don't void any warranties.

  • To maintain your grinder's cleanliness, consider using a small brush to clean it after every use.
